One of the most frustrating aspects of dealing with a chronic illness, such as diabetes or lupus, is the need to test your body constantly to make sure you're healthy. MicroCHIPS is looking to alleviate that with a new device that's implanted under the skin of a patient. The “chip,” about the size of a dime, senses changes in body chemistry and releases medicine when needed. It can also be remotely activated to drop medication as well.

The chip is much more precise than the finger pricking method for monitoring blood, and in diabetes sufferers, can minimize the risk of complications like blindness and kidney failure. The first glucose-monitoring and osteoporosis drug-releasing chips will begin human clinical trials next year. MicroCHIPS is looking into developing more advanced versions that can predict heart or kidney failure, biodegrade in the body, and release multiple vaccine or drug doses over time.

I have been tested for blood sugar a while ago and it feels like a bite of an ant. But if you're going to be tested often then that's no good anymore. Unfortunately after putting my blood sample the apparatus returned and error, im thinking if my blood sugar exceeded beyond 3 digits. Thanks to this gadget it won't hurt too often anymore after this thing is planted under your skin. Hopefully it is going to be maintenance free, like it has some built-in cleaner.

Playstation 2 component incites African war

Has the video game industry dug up its very own blood diamond?

According to a report by activist site Toward Freedom, for the past decade the search for a rare metal necessary in the manufacturing of Sony's Playstation 2 game console has fueled a brutal conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the center of the conflict is the unrefined metallic ore, coltan. After processing, coltan turns into a powder called tantalum, which is used extensively in a wealth of western electronic devices including cell phones, computers and, of course, game consoles.

Allegedly, the demand for coltan prompted Rwandan military groups and western mining companies to plunder hundreds of millions of dollars worth of the rare metal, often by forcing prisoners-of-war and even children to work in the country's coltan mines.

"Kids in Congo were being sent down mines to die so that kids in Europe and America could kill imaginary aliens in their living rooms," said Ex-British Parliament Member Oona King.

So where's the connection to Sony? According to Toward Freedom, during the 2000 launch of the PS2, the electronics giant was having trouble meeting consumer demand. To pump out more units, Sony required a significant increase in the production of electric capacitors, which are primarily made with tantalum. This helped drive the world price of the powder from $49/pound to a whopping $275/pound, resulting in the frenzied scouring of the Congolese hills known for being ripe with coltan.

Sony has since sworn off using tantalum acquired from the Congo, claiming that current builds of the PS2, PSP and PS3 consoles are sourced from a variety of mines in several different countries.

But according to researcher David Barouski, they're hardly off the hook.

"SONY's PlayStation 2 launch...was a big part of the huge increase in demand for coltan that began in early 1999," he explained. "SONY and other companies like it, have the benefit of plausible deniability, because the coltan ore trades hands so many times from when it is mined to when SONY gets a processed product, that a company often has no idea where the original coltan ore came from, and frankly don't care to know. But statistical analysis shows it to be nearly inconceivable that SONY made all its PlayStations without using Congolese coltan."

Currently, the Playstation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all-time, having sold through over 140 million units.

Day 2 - Davao Cyber Expo 2008 (DCE 2008)

I really enjoyed the 2nd Davao Cyber Expo 2008 especially the IT Forum part on its second day where the speaker of Adobe introduced the latest release of Acrobat Reader the version 9. The best part of it is he was giving away FREE t-shirts, ballpen and even a book dummy guide for photoshop! for just knowing Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 is FREE! I think everybody in the forum liked that.

Some displayed their talents in 3D graphics and web page development, the CMS(content management system) introduced by James Pitt(www.james-pitt.com) who has a british accent and spoke slowly for us to understand what he was saying.

On the joomla part, it was also a very neat CMS that you can easily deploy, but i was not able to finish the presentation because i had a terrible headache..(how unfortunate)

In an experiment described today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers led by University of California, San Diego pathologist David Cheresh designed nanoparticles that selectively attached to a protein found on the surface of blood vessels that supply tumors with nutrients and oxygen.

Hackers use SQL injection and scare tactics to grab consumers' credit card details

Researchers at IT security firm Sophos have warned lovers of video games that pages on the US-based Sony PlayStation website have been compromised by hackers.

Experts at SophosLabs™ have discovered that cybercriminals have successfully used an SQL injection attack to plant unauthorized code on pages promoting the PlayStation games "SingStar Pop" and "God of War".

One of the webpages on Sony PlayStation's US website that has been compromised by hackers.

At the time of writing the hacker's code attempts to dupe web surfers by running a fake anti-virus scan and displaying a bogus message that their computer is infected with a variety of different viruses and Trojan horses.

After pretending to scan your computer for malware, a bogus security warning is displayed.

The hackers' aim is to scare unsuspecting computer users into purchasing a bogus security product. Sophos warns, however, that it would be trivial for the hackers who have compromised the webpages to alter the payload so that it became more malicious, and installed code designed to turn Windows PCs into a botnet or to harvest confidential information from users.

"There are millions of video game lovers around the world, many of whom will visit Sony's PlayStation website regularly to find out more about the latest console games. Most would never expect that surfing to a website like this could potentially infect them with malware. If users do not have sufficient protection in place then they might find that before they know it they have been scared into handing their credit card details over to a bunch of cybercriminals," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "It is essential that all websites, especially when they are high profile like this or receiving a large level of traffic, have been properly hardened to prevent hackers from injecting malicious code on to what should be legitimate webpages."

Sophos customers are automatically protected against the threats (which Sophos identities as Troj/Iframe-AG and Mal/Badsrc), and users of other vendors' products are advised to update their software.

I just read about this software today and upon reading the features of this software, I think most of the chemist will like everything about this piece of software. Also supports MAC and unfortunately none for the Linux OS.
